<p>The Craig name comes from the Gaelic “creag,” meaning a rocky hill or outcrop, and appears in place names across Scotland such as Ailsa Craig and Craigellachie. Early records place the name in Ayrshire and Lanarkshire around the 12th century, and it appears on the Ragman Roll of 1296. The most notable branch, the Craigs of Riccarton, rose to prominence in the 16th century through Sir Thomas Craig’s influential writings on feudal law. As the name is unrelated to any Highland clan, the Craig tartan was created specifically for the family, with its grey-and-earth palette inspired by the colour of the craigs and rocky outcrops the name describes. Craig remains an armigerous clan, registered with the Court of the Lord Lyon but without a currently recognised chief.</p>
