Measurement Guide

Sizing Guide for Traditional Highland Wear

1. Kilt

Kilts are tailored garments that sit at your natural waist, approximately 2 inches above your belly button. Follow these steps to find your size:

  • Waist Measurement: Use a measuring tape to measure around your natural waist (not your hips). Ensure the tape is snug but not tight.
  • Hip Measurement: Measure around the widest part of your hips or seat.
  • Length Measurement: While standing straight, measure from your natural waist to the middle of your kneecap. This determines the kilt’s length.

Tip: Kilts are often custom-made, so it’s essential to provide accurate measurements.

2. Kilt Jacket

A kilt jacket (e.g., Argyll or Prince Charlie) should fit snugly but allow comfortable movement.

  • Chest Measurement: Measure around the fullest part of your chest, keeping the tape level under your arms and across your back.
  • Waist Measurement: Measure at your natural waist where the jacket will button.
  • Sleeve Length: Measure from the top of your shoulder (where it meets the neck) down to your wrist bone, bending your arm slightly.

Tip: Kilt jackets are traditionally worn with a short length to complement the kilt.

3. Vest (Waistcoat)

The vest should fit comfortably and not pull across the chest when buttoned.

  • Chest Measurement: Use the same chest measurement as for the kilt jacket.
  • Waist Measurement: Measure around your natural waist.
  • Length: Measure from the base of your neck (center back) to your natural waistline.

Tip: Ensure the vest doesn’t overlap too far over the kilt.

4. Ghillie Shirt / Dress Shirt

  • Neck Measurement: Wrap the tape measure around the base of your neck, where the collar sits. Allow a finger’s width for comfort.
  • Chest Measurement: Measure around the fullest part of your chest.
  • Sleeve Length: Measure from the shoulder seam to your wrist.
  • Shirt Length: Measure from the base of your neck to the desired length (usually around the hips).

Tip: Ghillie shirts are generally looser-fitting, so size up for comfort if in doubt.

5. Shoes / Boots (Ghillie Brogues or Boots)

  • Foot Length: Measure the length of your foot from heel to toe while standing.
  • Width: Measure the widest part of your foot.
  • Sizing Notes: Traditional Ghillie Brogues and boots often follow UK sizing. If converting to other sizing systems (e.g., US), check the manufacturer’s conversion chart.

Tip: Ghillie Brogues are worn with laces tied at the ankle, so ensure a snug fit but avoid overly tight shoes.
