The Brown Watch was created in the early 20th century at the request of an American admirer of Scottish textiles, adapting the historic Black Watch tartan, itself worn since the early 18th century by the Black Watch regiment. Like its parent tartan, the Brown Watch is universal, open to anyone regardless of family name.
