Every Carmichael carries the colours of Lanarkshire, blue and green crossed with black and red, sealed in the family’s own records.
The sett runs on a blue and green ground, with black lines and fine red accents threaded through. It is a balanced, classic Lowland pattern, first documented by the Scottish Tartans Society in 1907, when Carmichael of Artherstone sealed a sample into the Highland Society’s Collection.
The tartan was formally recorded in the Lord Lyon Book in 1984 by Richard Carmichael, 30th Chief of the family. The Carmichael name traces to lands in Lanarkshire granted to Sir James Douglas in 1321, later passing to Sir John Carmichael in the late 14th century, giving the clan its long-held seat in the Scottish Lowlands.
It suits Highland Games, weddings, Burns Night, or anyone with Carmichael or Lanarkshire roots. Pair it with a Prince Charlie jacket, add a dress sporran, and finish with a kilt pin.
Woven in tartan wool blend as a 5-yard kilt, or 8-yard for deeper pleating and heavier drape. Knife-pleated at the back with a flat front apron, fastened with leather straps and metal buckles. Made to your measurements, so send your waist and length and it is cut to fit.
