In Ireland, it derives from the Gaelic “Ó Conaill,” meaning “descendant of Conall” — Conall itself meaning “strong as a wolf” — and is most closely associated with County Kerry, with records dating to the 12th century. In Ulster, particularly Antrim, Tyrone, and Down, many bearing the Connell and MacConnell names are of Scottish stock, descended from Mac Dhomhnaill, a branch of the great Clan Donald. The Connell tartan itself appears in the Provost MacBean Collection of around 1890, now held in the Inverness Museum.</p>
