<p>The Earl of St. Andrews Tartan Kilt is woven in steel-blue, crossed with navy windowpane checks and a bold black overcheck with fine white lines — a cool, sophisticated colourway.</p>
<p>This tartan was designed in the early 1930s by Arthur Bottomly of Peter MacArthur Ltd in Hamilton, created in honour of Prince George, Earl of St Andrews, the fourth son of King George V. Prince George is said to have worn the tartan at a Scottish Society dinner in 1919, keeping the room guessing at its name before it was registered around 1930. His life was cut short by a plane crash during the Second World War — the first royal death on active service since James IV was killed at Flodden in 1513. The tartan’s popularity grew widely from the 1970s onward, helped along by its enduring association with the historic town of St Andrews and its famous golf links.</p>
