Every Maxwell traces to a powerful Border family, long seated in Dumfries and the south-west.
The sett is bold and simple: a bright red ground with green blocks and thin black stripes. It’s the pattern listed as Maxwell, sometimes Red Maxwell, in the 1842 Vestiarium Scoticum, and it’s been woven with that name for well over a century.
It carries well at weddings, clan gatherings, and Highland Games. Wear it with an Argyll jacket and a dress sporran to dress it up.
Wear it for the occasion, or because the name is yours.
