Every Gunn carries the sea in its colours, a deep blue-green ground crossed with fine red lines that trace back to Norse settlers on the northern coast.

The sett runs on a navy and dark green ground, overlaid with a black check and threaded through with a fine red line. It is a quiet, dignified pattern, the kind of tartan that reads dark from a distance and reveals its detail up close.

Clan Gunn descends from Norse Vikings who settled Caithness through Orkney, with the clan’s founding story centred on Gunni, who arrived at the end of the 12th century. Few Highland clans carry a Norse heritage as directly as the Gunns, and the tartan’s deep, sea-toned colours reflect that northern, coastal origin.

It suits Highland Games, weddings, Burns Night, or anyone with Gunn or Caithness roots. Pair it with a leather sporran, add kilt hose, and finish with a tartan flash.

Woven in tartan wool blend as a 5-yard kilt, or 8-yard for deeper pleating and heavier drape. Knife-pleated at the back with a flat front apron, fastened with leather straps and metal buckles. Made to your measurements, so send your waist and length and it is cut to fit.
