The Clan Johnstone Ancient Tartan Kilt carries the name of one of the mightiest clans of the Scottish Borders. The Johnstones of Annandale were a fierce riding family of Dumfriesshire, wardens of the West March who held the frontier against both English raiders and rival clans, and whose chiefs rose to become Marquesses of Annandale.
