Every MacAlister carries a red so bold it announces the name before anyone asks, crossed with green and fine blue, white and black lines.

The sett runs on a red ground, with large green blocks intersected by thinner blue and white stripes and a fine black line. It belongs to the wider group of MacDonald tartans, a bold and complex pattern true to its Lordship of the Isles roots.

The MacAlisters broke away from the main Clan Donald early in the 13th century, tracing descent from Alisdair Mor, second son of Donald, Lord of the Isles. By 1366 the clan was seated at Loup in Kintyre under Chief Ranald, son of Alexander, and the family has held that stretch of the west coast in memory ever since.

It suits Highland Games, weddings, Burns Night, or anyone with MacAlister or MacDonald roots. Pair it with a Prince Charlie jacket, add a leather sporran, and finish with kilt hose.

Woven in tartan wool blend as a 5-yard kilt, or 8-yard for deeper pleating and heavier drape. Knife-pleated at the back with a flat front apron, fastened with leather straps and metal buckles. Made to your measurements, so send your waist and length and it is cut to fit.

I wore the Clan MacAlister Tartan Kilt to a family gathering and it drew so many compliments. Strong stitching, heavy fabric, and a real sense of pride wearing it.
