Clanranald is one of the great branches of Clan Donald, the MacDonalds of the west Highlands and islands — Moidart, Arisaig, and South Uist.
The sett is more muted than the bright clan reds: green and blue grounds overlaid with a bright red pattern, and two narrow white lines that mark it out from the main MacDonald tartan. It was authenticated through Smith’s 1850 record and registered by the Lord Lyon Court in 1946.
It’s worn at weddings, clan events, and Highland Games by Clanranald MacDonalds worldwide. Wear it with a Prince Charlie jacket, a horsehair sporran, and a fly plaid for full ceremonial dress.
Wear it for the occasion, or because the name is yours.
