This is the Modern colouring of the MacDonald of Clanranald tartan, the great Clan Donald branch of the west Highlands and islands — Moidart, Arisaig, and South Uist.
The Modern shades run deeper than the Ancient: a dark green and navy ground overlaid with red, carrying the two narrow white lines that set Clanranald apart from the main MacDonald tartan. It was authenticated through Smith’s 1850 record and registered by the Lord Lyon Court in 1946.
It’s worn at weddings, clan events, and Highland Games by Clanranald MacDonalds worldwide. Wear it with a Prince Charlie jacket, a sealskin sporran, and a fly plaid for full ceremonial dress.
