Clan MacDougall of Argyll descends from Dougall, son of Somerled, the great twelfth-century Lord of the Isles. The clan held Lorn and the seas around Oban, with its seat at Dunollie Castle.
This is the Ancient colouring of the well-known MacDougall sett: a bright red ground crossed with blocks of green and blue, picked out with fine white and gold lines. It is one of the more striking of the western tartans.
It suits weddings, clan gatherings, and Highland Games, and carries the name of the old Lords of Lorn. Wear it with an Argyll jacket and a semi-dress sporran, finished with a set of kilt hose.
