Clan MacKenzie Weathered Tartan Kilt

Every Mackenzie carries a piece of proscription history in this tartan, the Weathered colourway said to show how the Mackenzie pattern looked after being buried and hidden during the years tartan was banned.

The sett runs on olive green and warm brown, crossed with grey and fine red and white lines that have faded to a dusty softness. Where the standard Mackenzie tartan runs bold and military, this Weathered version looks sun-bleached and time-worn, as if pulled from the ground after decades underground.

The Mackenzie tartan as it is known today grew out of an early Black Watch pattern, developed for Lord MacLeod’s 73rd Highland Regiment and continued by the Seaforth Highlanders, raised by the Earl of Seaforth in 1778. The Weathered colourway takes its inspiration directly from Highland folklore, tartan hidden from the law and dug up faded by rain, sun and soil.

It suits Highland Games, weddings, Burns Night, or anyone who prefers their tartan with a weathered, lived-in character. Pair it with an Argyll jacket, add a semi-dress sporran, and finish with kilt hose.

Woven in tartan wool blend as a 5-yard kilt, or 8-yard for deeper pleating and heavier drape. Knife-pleated at the back with a flat front apron, fastened with leather straps and metal buckles. Made to your measurements, so send your waist and length and it is cut to fit.
