MacLeod of Harris is a tartan of the Outer Hebrides, and this Ancient colouring carries the pale blue of the island sky and sea.
The sett is built on a pale blue ground with a large green check, crossed by black and lifted with fine yellow and red overchecks. It is a soft, layered pattern, quieter than the bright MacLeod dress tartan but no less distinctive.
The MacLeods of Harris held Dunvegan Castle on Skye and lands across Harris and the Outer Hebrides, one of the oldest continuously held clan seats in Scotland. Their story is bound up with the sea, the islands and centuries of Highland history, from Viking descent through to their long rivalry with the MacDonalds.
