Every Montgomery knows the Eglinton name that runs with this tartan. It belongs to a Lowland family, the Montgomeries of Ayrshire, represented by the Earls of Eglinton.
The sett is deep and unusual: a rich purple-toned ground crossed with green and red. The pattern was first woven by Wilsons of Bannockburn as their No. 7, “Eglinton,” and taken up by the Montgomeries around the time of the 1707 Union, which makes it one of the earliest Lowland tartans. The 13th Earl is remembered for the extravagant 1839 Eglinton Tournament, a full medieval joust staged in front of a crowd of thousands.
It suits formal Highland occasions: weddings, dinners, and clan gatherings. Wear it with a Prince Charlie jacket and a dress sporran for black tie.
