Jedforest belonged to the Crown before passing to Clan Douglas, and the Olivers lived there as tenants under Douglas protection for generations. Norman in origin, the name is counted among the septs of Clan Fraser, and the Olivers were active participants in Border life during the reiving era — the centuries of cross-border raids, cattle rustling, and clan feuds that defined the Anglo-Scottish frontier from the 13th century until the Union of the Crowns in 1603.</p>
