Clan Sutherland takes its name from the far north of Scotland, the land the Norse called the “south land,” held by the Earls of Sutherland for centuries.
The sett is close kin to the Black Watch: a deep green and navy ground crossed with black, here lit with fine red and white overcheck lines. The Old Sutherland pattern first appeared in the 1842 Vestiarium Scoticum.
It suits weddings, clan gatherings, and Highland Games. Wear it with a Prince Charlie jacket and a dress sporran for black tie.
