Glencoe is a district tartan, named for the glen in the western Highlands whose name carries the weight of the 1692 Massacre of Glencoe and the MacDonalds who lived there.
The sett is dark and colourful at once: a navy and red ground with sky-blue and yellow overcheck lines and touches of white. The oldest surviving Glencoe cloth dates to around 1740, which puts the pattern well before the 19th-century rise of formal clan tartans.
