Polaris is a regimental tartan, not a clan one, woven for the men who served the Cold War submarine fleet rather than for any single family name.
The sett is built on navy blue and dark green over black, with a fine gold line running through it. The navy stands for the naval uniform, the green for the depth of the ocean the submariners worked in, and the gold for Polaris itself, the star sailors have steered by for centuries.
The tartan was designed in 1964 by Alexander MacIntyre of Strone for the officers and men of the American submarine base at the Holy Loch in Scotland, home to the US Navy’s Polaris fleet during the Cold War. It is still worn today by the Pipes and Drums of the United States Naval Academy, a genuine piece of naval history in tartan form.
It suits veterans, serving personnel and their families, and anyone drawn to its naval story, worn at reunions, parades and formal occasions alike. Wear it with an Argyll kilt jacket, add a leather sporran, and finish with a leather kilt belt.
