<p>Clan Cunningham traces its origins to the 12th century and the district of Cunningham in Ayrshire, with the first Cunningham thought to be a Flemish settler named Wernebald, who received the lands of Kilmaurs from Hugo de Morville, Constable of Scotland, around 1140. The clan fought for King Alexander III at the Battle of Largs in 1263, earning a royal charter confirming their lands, and later supported Robert the Bruce at Bannockburn in 1314, receiving further lands in Ayrshire as reward. Today, Cunningham tartans are worn at weddings, Highland games, and Burns Night celebrations by descendants across Scotland, North America, Australia, and New Zealand.</p>
