<p>The Dempster name comes from the old Scottish office of “dempster” — a judex, or judge, who rendered verdicts on behalf of a baron or clan chief in the local baronial courts. The earliest recorded bearer of the name was Haldan de Emester of Perthshire, who paid homage to King Edward I in 1296. The family produced Thomas Dempster, a noted Scottish scholar and historian of the late 16th and early 17th centuries, and carries the motto “Fortiter et Strenue” — boldly and earnestly.</p>
