<p>The Douglas name derives from the Scottish Gaelic “dubh glas” — dark stream — and this near-black colourway echoes that origin directly. The senior line of Clan Douglas became known as the “Black Douglases” after Sir James Douglas, “the Good Sir James” or “Black Douglas,” rose to become Robert the Bruce’s most trusted companion during the Wars of Independence. The Black Douglases went on to hold the powerful Earldom of Douglas, wielding influence that rivalled the Scottish Crown itself, until the family’s power was violently curtailed at the infamous “Black Dinner” of 1440.</p>
