<p>Clan Elliot was one of the great Border Reiver families, arriving at Redheugh in Liddesdale during the reign of Robert the Bruce and stationed there to guard the Anglo-Scottish frontier. Alongside the Armstrongs, Nixons, and Crozers, the Elliots were among the four great riding clans of the 15th and 16th centuries, known for fierce independence and skilled horsemanship along one of Britain’s most contested borders. After the 1603 Union of the Crowns, King James VI cracked down on Border lawlessness and scattered many reiver families, but the Elliot motto, “Fortiter et Recte” — Boldly and Rightly — endures as a mark of that reiver spirit.</p>
