<p>The name Fletcher comes from the Gaelic “Mac-an-Leister” — son of the arrow-maker — and the clan traces its ancestry to Angus Mac-an-Leister, born around 1450, generally recognised as the earliest recorded chief. The Fletchers of Dunans, in Argyll, became hereditary arrowsmiths to Clan MacGregor, forging a bond so close that a Fletcher is said to have once saved the life of Rob Roy MacGregor when he was wounded. Only Fletchers who can trace their line back to those ancient MacGregor homelands are entitled to share fully in MacGregor heritage. In the decades following Culloden, the Fletchers of Dunans were cleared from their Argyll homeland, and many emigrated to Canada and the United States.</p>
